Message from the High Commissioner

Greetings from the High Commission of India in Ottawa!

As I begin my tenure as the High Commissioner of India to Canada, I have the pleasure to work on a strategic partnership that is already in good health. Canada is an important G-20 partner for India. We are keen to elevate our linkages to the next level with a strong focus on our economic ties.

The numbers are impressive. Post-secondary enrollment by Indian students at Canadian universities and colleges rose over 150 percent between 2014 and 2019 to 230,000, bringing in almost C$7 billion in tuition fees alone to Canadian institutions. The number of Indian tourists visiting Canada now exceeds 300,000, an increase of 60 percent since 2015. Canadian exports to India have also risen over 48 percent since 2014 to nearly C$5 billion in 2019. Over the last 4 years, Canadian investors, including Canadian pension funds, have pledged over C$55 billion in India. This is a strong base to build upon. India’s USD3 trillion economy, its growth rate, its sizeable young population and its vast market potential, offer unparalleled opportunities to Canadian businesses to scale up growth and make a mark on the global market.

We are proud to present a revamped India Canada Biz Digest, a weekly economic bulletin that seeks to provide a snapshot of the economic developments and policy changes in India as well as highlights of most important developments in India-Canada commercial relations. We hope that this digest will continue to be relevant to business and policy leaders in Canada. We look forward to your continued feedback and advice on improving this presentation.
