Independence Day celebrations at Ottawa

1.On the occasion of the 70thIndependence Day of India, High CommissionerVishnu Prakashunfurled the tricolor at the Chancery premises at 0900 hrs today. It was followed by singing of the National Anthem. The High Commissioner read out excerpts from President's message to the nation and addressed the gathering comprising of members and families of the Indo-Canadian Community, friends of India and officials of the High Commission. In the ensuing reception over simple refreshments the attendees interacted happily.

2.Earlier on 13th August, the India Canada Association (ICA) organized the first ever India Day Parade in Ottawa, with the active support of the High Commission of India. Despite rains,hundreds of people walked from the Parliament to the city hall, holding afloat banners, Indian and Canadian flags and singing patriotic songs. A number of Indian community associations and prominent individuals joined the parade with colourful floats. To mark the occasion, a special flag hoisting ceremony was held at the Ottawa city hall, followed by a cultural programme and brief reception. Cabinet Minister for Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKennna, Member of Parliament Chandra Arya, Deputy Mayor Bob Monette and the High Commissioner addressed the gathering.

3.In the evening High Commissioner Prakash will host a Reception at The Westin Ottawa. Over 400 Canadian political leaders, government officials, businessmen, academicians, members of the diplomatic corps, as well as, prominent Indo-Canadians and representatives of various Indian Community Associations, are expected to attend. The guests will be treated to a colourful cultural programme and sumptuous Indian delicacies.
